The Threat from the Sun : Skin Cancer

There are theree common types of skin cancers, the most srious of which is melanoma. Occuring in the pigment cells in the epidermis, melanoma is the most life-threatening. This is because it may spread quickyly to other organs in its early stages, causing a life-threatening illness. The other two catagories of skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). However, these two types of cancers generally develp more slowly.

Protecting Your Skin

Since exposure to the sun carries health risks, it's wise to follow recommended protection strategies. Whenever outdoors on a sunny day, you can apply sunscreen or sunblock, or you can cover your body with clothing such as a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and a hat. You should also wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. Regarding sunscreen and sunblock, it is important to find one that is board sprctrum; that is , one that protects against both UVA and UVB. Another important consideration is the SPF-sun protection factor. SPF numbers refer to how long you can remain exposed to the sun without burning. The higher the SPF number, the longer you can stay outside without suffering a sunburn. Experts recommend an SPF if at least 15. This should applied to your skin 15-30 minutes before you go outdoors. People have the choices of using sunscreen, which protects by absorbing ultraviolets rays, or sunblock, which contains particles that reflects the rays away from the skin. Still another protection strategy is to minimize outdoor activities, espeicially between 10 am to 4 pm.

Many people, particulary in the West, consider a suntan a sign of a healthy lifestyle. In truth,though this darkening is a symptem of damage to the skin. Ultimately, the more precautions taken against the risks of UV radiation exposure, the better your health.
